Aerial photography by Costas Spathis

Greek architect and photographer Costas Spathis , specializes in aerial photography and his work combines a minimalist style and geometrical compositions.

How did you get into aerial photography?

As a little boy, I was thinking in squares and lines, I was passionate for capturing topdown shots and remember looking for symmetry up in the sky. When social media firstly showed up I became more interested in sharing my point of view.

My photography was characterized by geometries and symmetry in every day life and nature, while focusing in human scale, topdown views, vanishing points, patterns etc. While wandering for these features in my work, I started using drones and that has evolved into my style of photography.

Whats the relationship between Geometry and a photograph?

Geometry is my main source of inspiration and I love wandering places and nature to discover interesting shapes. When geometry comes from nature, I like to capture the light and shadows that are created. I love to see the balance and composition in geometries through photography.

How to spot patterns in nature?

By combining architectural features with

those of photography, the composition of each shot can be geometric, minimal and many times the angle it is taken can resemble a pattern. Usually I find very interesting patterns in nature and I am always very prepared before I visit a place, by looking in maps and searching for interesting patterns made by natures.

Whats the next step in photography?

The improve of technology is increasingly influences contemporary art. I think photography in the future can be very idealized in a more realistic way.
